iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone: a 5.4-inch outer display when closed and a 7.6-inch inner display when open, which Apple says is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. For App Store Optimization, that’s more than an extra upload slot. Early Duo owners are actively hunting for apps that make the big screen worth it, and your screenshots are the first filter they’ll apply.
The eight tips below are drawn from Apple’s “Designing for iPhone Duo” section of the Human Interface Guidelines and the App Store Connect specifications. For exact sizes, see the iPhone Duo App Store screenshot sizes guide; for production steps, see how to make iPhone Duo mockups and screenshots.
Apple’s screenshot specifications state that when you submit iPhone Duo screenshots, your product page displays a badge letting people know your app is optimized for iPhone Duo. The hard requirement doesn’t arrive until April 2027 (for apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later), but the months right after the October 23 launch are when Duo owners are most actively looking for apps that support their new phone.
The sooner your Duo screenshots are live, the sooner the badge shows up. For categories that naturally benefit from a big screen — productivity, reading, note-taking, video, games — it’s a low-effort, high-visibility differentiator.
Apple’s guidance stresses a consistent experience across displays: same functionality, same state, same information hierarchy — with room for one additional level of hierarchy on the larger inner display. Your screenshots should follow the same logic:
Keep the feature order identical across both sets so nobody wonders whether they’re looking at two different apps.
Apple’s HIG uses Mail as the example: closed, it shows either the message list or a single message; open, it shows both side by side. That’s precisely the picture your inner screenshots should paint — list plus detail, canvas plus tool palette, video plus comments.
If your app simply scales its phone layout up on the inner display, your screenshots will struggle to excite anyone. Before you design the gallery, confirm the app actually adopts a regular-width layout on the inner screen. Apple recommends building on size classes — compact width for the outer display, regular width for the inner — rather than designing a custom layout for every pose.
Per Apple’s HIG, the outer display is wider and shorter than other iPhone screens, so the system moves toolbars, tab bars, and navigation controls to the side. They stay on the side when the inner display is in landscape; only the inner display in portrait keeps standard horizontal bars.
Show that layout honestly. It’s proof you actually adapted the app. Painting a classic bottom tab bar back in isn’t just inaccurate — screenshots are supposed to show the app in use, and misleading imagery is a common reason for trouble in review. See App Store screenshot rejections under Guideline 2.3.
The outer canvas (1398×2034) is noticeably squarer than a regular iPhone canvas, so there’s less vertical room for text. The inner canvas (2007×2853) is larger, but it still gets shrunk on the product page. A few working rules:
For typography and copy specifics, see App Store screenshot fonts and typography and our captions and localization guide.
Search results and product pages surface your first few screenshots before anything else, and that’s true for both Duo slots. Make outer screenshot #1 your strongest finished-state screen. Make inner screenshot #1 the full unfolded view, so people grasp within a second that the app is better on a big screen.
Many apps skip device frames and go full-bleed. During the Duo launch window, though, a recognizable foldable frame tells shoppers at a glance that they’re looking at an iPhone Duo screenshot. AppShotMaker’s screenshot editor includes eight built-in Duo frames — closed outer and open inner, in Night Sky and Star White, each in two styles — under the iPhone Duo group in the device panel. For marketing images, use the device mockup tool.
Whatever frame you use, its proportions must match the real device. Fake or distorted hardware erodes trust; see device mockup best practices.
For iPhone Duo, App Store Connect accepts app previews at 886×1920 (portrait) or 1920×886 (landscape), 15 to 30 seconds long. If your app has a satisfying closed-to-open continuity moment, video is the most direct way to show it — see app preview video vs screenshots.
Once your Duo screenshots are live, use Product Page Optimization to test alternative first screenshots and watch conversion. Our product page optimization and screenshot testing guide covers the setup.
We’re a small team. Can Duo screenshots wait? Yes — they aren’t mandatory before April 2027. But if your category benefits from a large screen, ship at least three inner and three outer screenshots now to earn the badge.
Do Duo screenshots affect keyword rankings? Apple hasn’t published any direct link between screenshots and search ranking. Screenshots drive conversion rate; any ASO benefit comes indirectly through the extra downloads better conversion brings.
Can I reuse my 6.3-inch iPhone designs for the outer display? Reuse the layout ideas, not the pixels. The 6.3-inch canvas is tall and narrow, while the outer canvas is close to a 0.69 width-to-height ratio, so headlines and device placement need to be re-laid out.
Portrait or landscape for the inner display? Video, games, spreadsheets, and drawing apps may suit landscape (2853×2007). Most apps are better served by portrait (2007×2853), where — per Apple’s HIG — the inner display keeps familiar horizontal bars.
Do I need separate sets for different regions? Composition can be shared; captions should be localized. See localizing app screenshots.
