PPO is not CPP (and that matters)
Apple gives you two powerful but different product-page tools:
- Custom Product Pages (CPP) — extra pages with unique URLs for campaigns and themed messaging (up to dozens of pages).
- Product Page Optimization (PPO) — an A/B test of alternate icons, screenshots, and app previews against your default product page for a share of App Store traffic.
If you mix them up, you will “test” creatives that never enter the PPO traffic split—or worse, expect PPO to power Search Ads landing pages (that is largely a CPP + Apple Ads job).
This article is a shipping guide for screenshot-focused PPO.
What Apple says you can compare
Apple’s Product Page Optimization documentation states you can compare different app icons, screenshots, and app previews, with up to three treatments against the original, then view results in App Analytics and apply the best performer to everyone.
Useful implications:
- Treatments are sticky for a given user for the duration of the test.
- Alternate icons, screenshots, or previews may also appear in search results and editorial tabs—not only on the product page.
- If a treatment uses an alternate icon and someone downloads from that treatment, that icon can follow through to the device (subject to Apple’s icon rules and binary support).
Eligibility and setup constraints (read before designing art)
From App Store Connect help on creating and configuring PPO tests:
- The app generally needs a Ready for Distribution (or pre-order ready) state on the App Store.
- You choose how many treatments (up to three) and a traffic proportion allocated to treatments overall (then split across treatments).
- You select which localizations participate.
- Default treatments copy the original page; you edit only the pieces under test.
- Metadata must be approved by App Review before the test runs. New screenshots/previews can be submitted for review without a new app version in many cases.
- If you only reorder already-approved screenshots/previews or only change among already-approved icons, you may not need a fresh review.
- Alternate icons must exist in the current App Store binary (built with an SDK that supports alternate icons in the asset catalog). You cannot PPO an icon that is not in the binary.
- PPO is not available for Custom Product Pages, nor for Apple Watch / iMessage product pages (per Connect help notes).
- Tests run up to 90 days or until you stop them. Analytics views become meaningful after a small number of first-time downloads are attributed (Apple documents a low minimum threshold before results appear).
Screenshot hypotheses worth testing
Write hypotheses that change one narrative variable:
- Hero promise: productivity outcome vs feature grid
- Social proof: rating callout vs clean UI (watch honesty/policy)
- Audience cue: consumer lifestyle imagery vs power-user dense UI
- Mode: Dark Mode lead frame vs Light Mode
- Localization: culturally adapted first frame vs literal translation
Avoid mega-variants that redesign all ten screenshots and the preview simultaneously—you will not know what caused the lift.
Device size behavior
Connect notes that if you do not edit screenshots for a given device size, the treatment inherits the original assets for that size. Practical workflow:
- Always produce a complete iPhone set for the treatment.
- Update iPad only when the hypothesis involves iPad UX; otherwise inherit.
- Keep a checklist of which sizes you intentionally changed so analytics interpretation stays honest.
How to structure treatments
Example traffic plan for a mid-traffic app:
- Original (baseline): 70%
- Treatment A (result-first screenshots): 15%
- Treatment B (tutorial-first screenshots): 15%
Fewer treatments reach significance faster. Three treatments plus a tiny traffic share on a niche app can idle until the 90-day cap.
Name treatments for humans (result_first_v3, not only Treatment A) so Analytics discussions stay sane.
App Review tips specific to PPO creatives
- Screenshots must still depict the actual app experience; promotional lies fail both Review and conversion.
- Pricing claims, “ranked #1” badges, and misleading comparison charts are frequent foot-guns.
- If your test includes an icon change, confirm the alternate icon is in the live binary before you design the whole campaign around it.
- Submit PPO metadata for review early; waiting until launch week stacks dependencies on Review SLAs.
Monitoring and apply/rollback
In App Analytics, compare impressions, conversion rate, relative improvement, and confidence against the baseline. You can change which treatment is treated as baseline when comparing multiple challengers.
When a winner is clear:
- Apply it to the default product page.
- Archive the losing sets with dates and hypotheses.
- Schedule the next single-factor test—PPO is a loop, not a one-off trophy.
If results are flat, stop early only when traffic cannot possibly reach your target lift inside 90 days; otherwise let the week/weekend cycle complete.
PPO vs experiments on Google Play (quick contrast)
| Topic | Apple PPO | Google Play listing experiments |
|---|
| Primary surfaces | App Store product page (+ search/tabs exposure) | Play store listing |
| Typical variants | Up to 3 treatments + original | Console-defined variants |
| Icon testing | Requires icons in live binary | Listing icon experiment without binary swap (listing asset) |
| Campaign landing pages | Use CPP, not PPO | Custom store listings / other Play tools |
Use both stores’ native tests; do not assume a Play winner ports to iOS creatives unchanged.
Production workflow for screenshot sets
- Capture raw UI from the build that is live (or about to be).
- Build control and treatment in parallel with identical safe margins.
- Export per required iPhone/iPad sizes.
- Upload to the treatment; leave untouched sizes inherited.
- Submit for Review if needed; start the test only when approved.
Teams that need fast, consistent exports often assemble both PPO variants from the same captures with AppShotMaker, then keep naming mirrored (ppo_control_01, ppo_tA_01) for saner QA.
Closing
Product Page Optimization rewards boring excellence: one hypothesis, approved metadata, complete device coverage where it matters, and the patience to read conversion with confidence. Treat screenshots as experimental units—not seasonal decoration—and your default page will compound gains release after release.
