Design & features

Smiley Sans takes its name from its hooked strokes, which curve like the corner of a smile, making it a distinctive narrow oblique. The designers fine-tuned the hooks and inner spaces glyph by glyph, aiming to set an example for open-source Chinese display type.

Besides Chinese it includes Latin, kana and pinyin letters, plus three sets of numerals (default, lining for all-caps, and tabular), supporting 100+ languages including pan-European languages and Vietnamese.

Best uses

Smiley Sans shines in sports and speed themes and brand slogans, and is a good fit for article header images too. For headlines, tighten the tracking a little and size it well above body text for a clear hierarchy.
