Every Christmas, Chinese New Year and Double 11, major apps roll out holiday themes, yet your screenshots are still the set you uploaded last March.
How much do you think holiday screenshots affect downloads? The data says: 15–35%.
A SplitMetrics analysis shows that apps that update their screenshots during holidays see 15–35% higher average download conversion than those that don't. Seasonal updates bring an extra bonus too: more exposure in the App Store's "Updates" feed.
People are naturally more sensitive to things that are "new" and "now". When users see snowflakes and Christmas elements on your screenshots in December, they subconsciously feel "this app is alive and maintained", which builds more trust than a screenshot that never changes all year.
Holidays are peak times for emotional spending. Holiday visuals (red and green, snowflakes, lanterns, hearts) trigger emotional associations and reduce decision friction.
There's no official confirmation, but several ASO practitioners have observed that apps that update screenshots regularly perform better in search rankings. That may be because updated screenshots signal an "active" app, and activity is one of the factors Apple uses to assess app quality.
Here's a year-round update calendar suited to developers in China. For overseas readers: 618 (June 18) and Double 11 (November 11) are China's biggest online shopping festivals, and Chinese New Year and the National Day/Mid-Autumn holidays are the biggest seasonal moments of the year.
| Month | Holiday/event | Update type | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Chinese New Year | Major update (red + gold theme) | ★★★★★ |
| February | Valentine's Day | Minor update (heart elements) | ★★★ |
| March | International Women's Day (March 8) | Minor update (theme color) | ★★ |
| May | May Day / Mother's Day | Minor update | ★★ |
| June | 618 / Dragon Boat Festival | Medium update (promo elements) | ★★★★ |
| August | Qixi (Chinese Valentine's Day) | Minor update (romantic elements) | ★★ |
| September | Back to school | Medium update (student theme) | ★★★ |
| October | National Day / Mid-Autumn Festival | Major update (red and gold + full moon) | ★★★★★ |
| November | Double 11 | Major update (promo theme) | ★★★★★ |
| December | Christmas / New Year's Day | Major update (red and green + snowflakes) | ★★★★ |
For the whole year: do at least 4 major updates (Chinese New Year, National Day, Double 11, Christmas) and minor updates for other holidays as you see fit.
Change only the text and decorative elements, keeping the overall layout the same.
How:
Time cost: 1 hour | Best for: indie developers short on time
Redesign the whole set around the holiday, weaving in holiday elements while still showing the app's features.
How:
Time cost: 3–4 hours | Best for: developers with some design skills
Mark the campaign dates clearly on the screenshots to create urgency.
How:
Time cost: 2 hours | Best for: apps running promotions
| Event | Suggested update date | Revert date |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year | 7 days before | After the Lantern Festival (15th day of the lunar new year) |
| Double 11 | End of October | November 12 |
| Christmas | December 20 | December 27 |
| Valentine's Day | February 12 | February 15 |
Note: App Store screenshot review usually takes 24–48 hours, so upload early. Don't update on the holiday itself; by then it's too late.
Switch back to your regular screenshots within 1–2 days after the holiday ends. Outdated holiday screenshots (such as a Christmas theme still showing in March) make users think nobody maintains the app.
Snowflakes drifting over the headline, lanterns hiding feature buttons: decorations are there to enhance, not to cover content.
Principle: put decorations at the edges and corners of the screenshot; keep core text and visuals clear.
If your app isn't e-commerce, heavy promo elements (big red banners, "free for a limited time", etc.) cheapen your brand.
Principle: utility apps should use atmosphere (colors + decorations), not hard selling; e-commerce apps can go bold with promo tags.
This is the most common pitfall. The holiday is over and your screenshots still say "New Year deals", which hurts conversion more than never updating at all.
Recommendation: set a calendar reminder and revert to regular screenshots within 2 days after the holiday.
The worst part of frequent screenshot updates is the hassle. AppShot Maker (appshotmaker.com) supports template-based screenshot design: just swap the copy and decorations, and sizes and layouts adapt automatically. You can finish a holiday set in 10 minutes and stop dreading screenshot changes.
Seasonal screenshot updates aren't a nice-to-have; they can lift conversion by 15–35%.
Remember 3 things:
Your screenshots should be like your app: alive.
