Why screenshot sizes still trip up indie launches

Wrong pixel dimensions are one of the most common App Store Connect upload failures. Apple accepts only specific width × height pairs, rejects alpha channels, and scales missing slots from larger sets—so uploading the right required sizes (and knowing when optional sizes are worth the extra work) saves hours of rejection loops.

This guide maps Apple’s current App Store Connect screenshot specifications for iPhone and iPad, clarifies required vs optional, and gives a practical export checklist for indie teams and mobile marketers.

Required vs optional: the short answer

According to Apple’s App Store Connect screenshot specifications:

  • iPhone (required): at least one screenshot for iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display) — accepted sizes 1179 × 2556 or 1206 × 2622 (portrait; swap for landscape).
  • iPad (required if the app runs on iPadOS): at least one screenshot for the 13″ display — 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732 (portrait; swap for landscape).
  • Count: 1–10 screenshots per device size class.
  • Format: .jpeg, .jpg, or .png — no alpha / transparency.

Apple also documents a large Dynamic Island class (commonly discussed as the 6.9″ set) and a Face ID large class (the classic 6.5″ set). If you omit the large Dynamic Island set, App Store Connect can fall back to scaled 6.5″ assets in some slots—and the 6.5″ class itself is marked required when large Dynamic Island screenshots are not provided. In practice, most teams upload one high-resolution iPhone set and one 13″ iPad set, then let Connect scale down for smaller phones and tablets.

iPhone screenshot sizes (2026)

Use portrait dimensions below; landscape is the same pair swapped. Device lists are Apple’s class membership, not a guarantee that every model ships at that physical diagonal.

Display classAccepted portrait sizes (px)Typical role
Dynamic Island large (≈6.9″)1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, 1320 × 2868Best “master” set for modern Max/Plus/Air-class phones
Face ID large (≈6.5″)1284 × 2778, 1242 × 2688Required if large Dynamic Island set is missing
Dynamic Island medium (≈6.3″)1179 × 2556, 1206 × 2622Required minimum for iPhone submission
Face ID medium (≈6.1″)1170 × 2532, 1125 × 2436, 1080 × 2340Optional; scales from larger sets
Home Button large (5.5″)1242 × 2208Optional legacy
Home Button medium (4.7″)750 × 1334Optional legacy
Home Button 4″ / 3.5″640 × 1136 / 640 × 960 (status-bar variants exist)Optional legacy

Practical recommendation: Export your marketing frames at 1320 × 2868 or 1290 × 2796 when you want one master that looks sharp after scaling, and ensure App Store Connect still has a valid medium Dynamic Island upload for the required slot—either by uploading that size explicitly or confirming Connect’s scaling fills it from your larger assets as your account UI allows.

Which phones sit in which bucket

Apple groups devices by upload slot, not marketing names:

  • Large Dynamic Island: iPhone Air, recent Pro Max / Plus generations listed in Connect for that class.
  • Face ID large (6.5″): iPhone 14 Plus, 13/12/11 Pro Max, 11, XS Max, XR, and similar.
  • Medium Dynamic Island: recent Pro / non-Max phones (e.g. 16/17/18 Pro-class listings in Connect).
  • Medium Face ID: SE-class and older rectangular-notch phones in the 6.1″ family.

Always verify the exact accepted sizes in App Store Connect → your version → Screenshots before a release freeze—Apple updates class membership as new hardware ships.

iPad screenshot sizes

DisplayPortrait sizes (px)Requirement
13″2064 × 2752, 2048 × 2732Required if the app runs on iPad
12.9″2048 × 2732Optional; scales from 13″ if empty
11″1488 × 2266, 1668 × 2420, 1668 × 2388, 1640 × 2360Optional; scales from 13″
10.5″1668 × 2224Optional
9.7″1536 × 2048 / 1536 × 2008 (status-bar variants)Optional

If your UI is the same across iPad sizes, one 13″ set is enough. Upload dedicated 11″ frames only when scaled 13″ crops important chrome (split views, sidebars, keyboard layouts).

How App Store Connect scaling works

Apple’s rule of thumb: if the UI is consistent across device sizes and localizations, provide screenshots for the highest required resolution and let Connect scale down. You can override any slot with device-specific images when scaled results look soft, crop captions, or misrepresent iPad multitasking.

Localization note: screenshots can be localized per language. App previews fall back to the “next best” available language when a localization is missing—screenshots should still be planned for your highest-traffic locales.

Format and compliance checklist

Before you batch-export:

  1. No transparency — flatten PNGs; remove alpha.
  2. Exact pixel match — “almost” 1290 × 2796 fails validation.
  3. 1–10 images per size class — order matters: the first few appear in search results and Today-style surfaces.
  4. Follow App Store Review Guidelines — no misleading pricing claims, no competitor trademarks in creatives, accurate depiction of the app.
  5. Status bar hygiene — prefer clean, full battery/Wi‑Fi glyphs and no personal notifications if you show a status bar at all.
  6. Watch / Mac / TV / Vision — separate required sizes if you ship those platforms (Watch needs a consistent size across all localizations).

Indie workflow: one master, two uploads

A lean process that works for most universal apps:

  1. Design marketing screenshots on a 1320 × 2868 (or 1290 × 2796) canvas.
  2. Keep safe margins so captions survive Connect scaling to medium slots.
  3. Duplicate the set to 13″ iPad (2064 × 2752) when you support iPad—adjust layouts, don’t just letterbox phone frames.
  4. Validate uploads in Connect’s Media Manager before submitting for review.
  5. Re-export only when hardware classes change or a localization needs different copy.

Tools such as appshotmaker.com can generate multi-size exports from one design pass; whatever stack you use, treat Apple’s pixel list as the source of truth.

Keep this page bookmarked

Screenshot specs move when Apple ships new displays. Before every major release:

  • Re-open Apple’s official Screenshot specifications page in App Store Connect Help.
  • Confirm which slots your version still marks as required.
  • Spot-check the first three screenshots on a physical device and in Connect’s preview.

Get the sizes right once, automate exports, and spend your creative energy on conversion—not on rejection emails about wrong dimensions.
